Fire destroys Hengelo church
The Moeder Theresa church in Hengelo was destroyed by a fire during the early hours of Monday morning. The fire is now under control, though firefighters are still working on extinguishing it completely. The building can be considered lost, according to the fire brigade, Tubantia reports.
The fire brigade responded to the church on Meijersweg in the 't Lansink district at around 4:00 a.m. on Monday morning. Water from the Twente canal is being used to fight the fire. Haaksbergerstraat, Binnenhaven, Parkhuisstraat and part of Breemarsweg towards the canal are currently closed to traffic, due to fire extinguishing hoses lying across the streets.
At around 4:45 a.m., the fire department announced that the church can be considered lost. From then on, their focus was on securing valuables from the church. Whether the firefighters managed to save any items, is not yet clear.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. It damaged some homes in the area, but the fire brigade managed to prevent the fire spreading to other buildings. No one was injured in the blaze.
