Persistent heat triggers code yellow warning

Meteorological institute KNMI issued a code yellow warning for persistent heat, due to hot weather expected this week. The high temperatures are expected to last until at least Wednesday, and the weather warning therefore remains in effect until then.

The warning applies to the entire country, except for the coastal provinces. Maximums above 30 degrees are expected for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, with lots of sunshine, little wind and no rain. Make sure you stay hydrated, keep your home and yourself cool, and avoid strenuous exercise during the heat of the day, the KNMI warns.

Public health institute RIVM implemented the heat plan in Drenthe, Overijssel, Gelderland, Utrecht, Flevoland, Noord-Brabant and Limburg - the same provinces covered by the code yellow weather warning. "Especially for groups of vulnerable people, such as the elderly, babies, the chronically ill, overweight people, people in care homes and people in social isolation, the heat can lead to health risks. These people must be alert to dehydration and overheating. Also babies and very young children need extra attention to stay cool and drink enough", the RIVM warns, according to RTL Nieuws.
