Long weekend & bad weather: busy evening rush hour expected

Road users must take an extra busy evening rush hour into account on Friday afternoon, according to travelers' association ANWB. In addition to stormy weather set to hit the Netherlands in the afternoon, many people are also expected to hit the road to spend the Pentecost long weekend elsewhere.

Meteorological institute KNMI warns that thunderstorms will move from the southwest to the northeast across the country during the second half of the afternoon. Heavy downpours, hail and strong winds with gusts up to 100 kilometers per hour are expected. The meteorological institute issued a code yellow warning for the entire country.

The most traffic is expected on the roads towards the Veluwe, the south, the coast, and the ferry services to the Wadden Islands, the ANWB said, RTL Nieuws reports. The roads in the middle of the country and Zeeland will also likely be busier than usual, starting from around 3:00 p.m.

According to the ANWB, many people will also be heading abroad for the holiday weekend. Germany, Belgium and France are the most popular destinations.
