King's Day 2019: Public transit reroutes and road closures in Amsterdam
Residents of and visitors to Amsterdam may have to take an alternative route when moving about the city on King's Day today. Parts of the city are blocked off to car traffic, and public transit in the capital are running on adjusted schedules and alternative routes.
Many parts of the inner city will be closed to cars from 7:30 a.m. This roughly involves the area inside the S100, according to Het Parool. That includes the Nassaukade, Stadhouderskade, Amstel, and Valkenburgerstraat. Houtmankade, De Ruijterkade, and Piet Heinkade remain open to traffic. The municipality hopes that the city center can be reopened for car traffic at around 11:00 p.m., though that depends on what time the festivals end and visitors head home.
National railway NS expects that some 200 thousand visitors will come to Amsterdam by train on King's Day. In order to manage the crowds well, the Dutch rail company is running on a special timetable. Find more information on that here.
Trams, buses and subways in Amsterdam are running on adjusted routes. No trams will be running in the city center. Only tram 26 will stop at Amsterdam Central Station. The remaining trams will run according to the normal Saturday timetable as much as possible. The same applies to GVB buses. More information can be found here.
Most taxi ranks in the city center will be closed on King's Day. People who come by train are advised to go to the taxi rank behind Central Station. There will also be taxi ranks at Stadhouderskade, Leidseplein, Museumbrug, Frederiksplein, Haarlemmerplein and on the Blauwbrug at the Stopera. People attending festivals Orajnebloesem, Stadspodium and Loveland can go to the temporary taxi ranks at these events.
The municipality warns that the ferries may be crowded. Extra ferries will travel between NDSM and Amsterdam Central Station.
For pleasure craft, there is special sailing route in place. Information on that can be found here. Boats longer than 10 meters will not be permitted on Zoutkeetsgracht, Westerdok, Prinsengracht, Herengracht, Keizersgracht, Singel, Rokin, Grimburgwal and Oudezijds Voorburgwal.
