Code yellow warning issued in anticipation of stormy Tuesday

Meteorological institute KNMI warns of possibly stormy weather heading to the Netherlands on Tuesday. Strong winds can be expected starting in the early hours of the morning, especially in the coastal areas.

The KNMI issued a code yellow warning for the coastal provinces and Drenthe, Overijssel and Flevoland. Gusts of wind up to 90 kilometers per hour can be expected. In the northern parts of the country, the wind can reach speeds of 100 kilometers per hour. The warning is in effect from 6:00 a.m. untill 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. "Follow weather reports and warnings", the meteorological institute warns. The strong winds may be accompanied by showers.

Whether the strong winds will actually turn into a storm, remains to be seen, Weerplaza meteorologist Raymond Klaassen said to NU.nl. A storm is classified by at least ten continuous minutes of wind force 9. According to Klaassen, the chance of a northwesterly storm is greatest on the north side of the Wadden Islands, but most places will see no more than wind force 8.

Due to the strong wind, there is a solid chance of more items from container ship MSC Zoe washing ashore on the Wadden Islands, according to Weerplaza. The MSC Zoe lost at least 281 containers in the North Sea last week. 18 of them have already washed ashore in the Wadden area, and around 220 were located on the sea floor.

"The junk that still lies in the sea or escapes from opened containers, floats in the direction of the Wadden Sea. That means that a lot of rubbish can wash up", Klaassen said. "In addition, the wind pushes the seawater up, causing the sea to rise further up the beaches. This can cause a broader beach strip to be polluted."
