Truck leaks thousands of liters of drug waste onto Nijmegen streets

The police are investigating a drug waste leak on Weezenhof in Nijmegen. A truck leaked thousands of liters of chemicals onto the streets in the city. The police believe the chemicals are residual waste from a drug lab, ANP reports.

The police and fire department launched an investigation after a strange smell was reported in the city around 10:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The truck was found in a parking lot, which turned out to be the end of a 9 kilometers long track of leaked chemicals. Barrels that could contain a total of 4,500 liters of waste were found in the truck. Many of these barrels were empty.

The fire department concluded that the chemicals that leaked from the truck contain an acid that could cause burns when touched. It could also damage cars that drive over it. The fire brigade and environmental service are working on cleaning up the waste.

Witnesses report seeing two men running away from the truck. The police are investigating and call on witnesses to come forward.

On Sunday Eindhoven also had problems with drug waste and chemicals used in the production of synthetic drugs. The residents of 12 apartments on Offenbachlaan were evacuated on Sunday morning after a truck containing drug waste caught fire near their building. A few hours earlier, around midnight on Saturday, another truck was found leaking ecstasy waste on the same street.
