Randstad area gets entire month worth of rain in one day
Parts of the Randstad area got more rain on Wednesday than usually falls in the entire month of September. Between 40 and 70 millimeters of rain fell in Zuid-Holland, Noord-Holland and Utrecht on Tuesday, according to Weeronline. Nieuwkoop got a massive 130 mm or rain.
Usually an average of 78 millimeters of rain falls throughout the month of September, according to the weather service. Due to global warming, extreme downpours are becoming increasingly common.
The last time such a quantity of rain fell in the Netherlands in one day was on June 28th, 2014. Then Alphen aan den Rijn got 180 mm of rain. The largest amount of rain that ever fell at an official KNMI precipitation station was 208 mm in Voorthuizen on August 3rd, 1948.
Nieuwkoop got the most rain on Wednesday with 130 mm, followed by Woerden with 97 mm, Bodegraven with 84 mm, Berkel en Rodenrijs with 60 mm and Zoetermeer with 58 mm.
