Hague stabbings attempted murders with terrorist intent: Prosecutor

The Public Prosecutor suspects a 32-year-old man who stabbed three random people in The Hague in May of attempted murder with terrorist intent. The man will appear in court for the first time in a pro-forma hearing next week Monday, RTL Nieuws reports.

The suspect, from Syria, was shot in the leg by police officers before being arrested. His three victims were taken to hospital, but were not critically injured.

Shortly after the stabbing on Johanna Westerdijkplein, the police released a statement saying: "The man is only known to the police because of disturbed behavior. At this stage there is no indication that more is going on."

In March the police received an anonymous warning that the man was planning a terrorist attack. The police shared this information with intelligence service AIVD as well as experts in the municipality of The Hague. "At the time, this broad investigation gave no reason to regard the man as someone with a terrorist background, but could not exclude this either", the Prosecutor said about the report.
