Arne Slot leads search for new Oranje coach as speculation gathers pace

Arne Slot has emerged as the early bookmakers' favorite and the public's dream candidate to replace Ronald Koeman, who officially resigned following the Netherlands' penalty-shootout elimination by Morocco in the World Cup Round of 32. But several other options, including Erik Ten Hag and Pep Guardiola, have also been discussed in media reports.

Slot is currently unattached after a stint at Liverpool. The 47-year-old former Feyenoord manager is widely praised in the Netherlands for his commitment to traditional, attacking Dutch football, a stylistic element critics felt Koeman abandoned during the World Cup.

While close sources like football journalist Mikos Gouka noted in the AD that Slot generally prefers the daily routine of club football, those in his inner circle have confirmed that Slot would consider it a tremendous honor to be appointed as manager and is explicitly open to the role.

With KNVB technical director Nigel de Jong spearheading the immediate search, several high-profile Dutch managers are currently being discussed in the media as the leading potential successors. One of these options is Erik Ten Hag. The 55-year-old is highly discussed following a brief spell managing Bayer Leverkusen. While he is currently working in a backroom technical role with FC Twente, the allure of the national team dugout could shift his plans.

If the Dutch football federation were to promote from within, then Michael Reiziger would be the most logical choice. The current Jong Oranje (Netherlands Under-21) head coach has built a strong reputation working with the country's elite youth players and would provide an easier transition.

The most prominent domestic Eredivisie candidate is Peter Bosz. He recently won his third Eredivisie title in a row as PSV manager. However, some Dutch football analysts speculate whether the KNVB is fully aligned with him for the role.

The KNVB could also opt to promote Ruud van Nistelrooij. Having served directly as Koeman's assistant coach, the former legendary Manchester United and Oranje striker is an automatic name in the conversation, despite mixed recent tenures at PSV and Leicester City.

Some of the more outlandish options include Sarina Wiegman, Pep Guardiola, and Louis van Gaal. Prominent Dutch football pundits Jan and Youri Mulder publicly suggested that the KNVB should consider Wiegman, the current England Women's manager, citing her immense tactical prowess and historic past success leading the Oranje Leeuwinnen.

Regarding Van Gaal, while the 74-year-old tactical icon historically serves as the KNVB's ultimate safety net, sports analysts believe his age and health make a fourth tenure highly unlikely.

While Slot represents the realistic domestic choice, Pep Guardiola's name has captured the imagination of Dutch media and supporters. The speculation is fueled by Guardiola’s own past admissions.

Former Dutch international Frank de Boer recently highlighted that Guardiola privately expressed an explicit desire to coach the Netherlands national team one day. This matches comments Guardiola made in the Força Koeman documentary, where he openly remarked, "If the Netherlands ever needs a coach... here I am!"

De Jong is under pressure to act fast, as the Nations League kicks off on September 24 against Germany.
