Chilly weekend may be followed by heat wave

The Netherlands has a somewhat chilly weekend ahead of it, with temperatures ranging between 15 and 18 degrees. But after that, summer will return and there is even a chance of a heat wave, according to Weerplaza.

After the weekend, the weather will be influenced by a high pressure area. The wind direction will turn east and hot air will come the Netherlands' way. On Monday there is already a chance of temperatures up to 25 degrees in the southeast of the country, and from Tuesday the rest of the country will also see 25 degrees or higher, maybe even into the 30s, according to the weather services.

For a period of hot weather to be classified as a heat wave, the KNMI station in De Bilt must measure temperatures of 25 degrees or higher for five days in a row. Three of those days must be above 30 degrees.

Next week's high temperatures will likely also break the record for the number of summer days in the first 6 months of a year. The current record stands at 18 summer days, dating from 1992 and 2000. This year the Netherlands already had 18 summer days, so the current record is already matched. "With the expectation in mind, it is probable bordering on certain that this record will be broken", Weerplaza writes.
