Failed asylum seekers try to squat in another Amsterdam building

A number of members of We Are Here, a group of failed asylum seekers who have been squatting in Amsterdam buildings for years, tried to squat in a building on Hoog Kadijk in Amsterdam city center on Sunday afternoon. There were already people in the building, so the asylum seekers left, Het Parool reports.

The group tried to move into the building, because they have to leave their current buildings on Rudolf Dieselstraat in Amsterdam Oost on Monday, We Are Here spokesperson Khalid Jone confirmed to the newspaper. The failed asylum seekers will listen to the court order to leave the buildings, despite failing to squat in a new one on Sunday, he said. They don't know where they will go.

The new Amsterdam coalition of GroenLinks, D66, PvdA and SP want to offer failed asylum seekers in the city 24-hour shelter, despite opposition from the national government. The new shelter offers a solution for a maximum of 18 months, after which the failed asylum seekers must cooperate with their return to their country of origin. We Are Here does not intend to make use of this 24-hour shelter, Jone said to the newspaper. Jone fears that the members of his group will only end up back on the streets.
