Schiedam ax waver suffering from psychosis, mayor says

A man who caused unrest in Schiedam by waving an ax around on Wednesday afternoon, likely suffered from psychosis, Schiedam mayor Cor Lamers said to Radio Rijnmond. The 26-year-old Syrian man was arrested after he killed a police dog, and a member of the SWAT team shot him in the leg.

Witnesses report that the man was shouting 'Allahu akbar', but according to Lamers, there are no indications that he has any terrorist motives. The man has been living with his father in Schiedam since 2015. He is "somewhat familiar" to aid agencies, but not because of major psychological problems, the mayor said.

Over the coming days the authorities will check with which aid agencies the man had contact with. The man is still in the hospital.
