Prison and treatment for fatal stabbing on Amsterdam subway

The court in Amsterdam sentenced Philip O. to five years in prison and institutionalized psychiatric treatment for stabbing a random man to death on Amsterdam subway 53 last year, NOS reports

The 38-year-old victim was on his way home on subway line 38 in July last year when O. stabbed him out of nowhere. The incident happened near Venserpolder station. Bystanders and emergency services tried to resuscitate the Amsterdam man, and he was rushed to hospital, but he died of his injuries.

O. was institutionalized at the psychiatric department of AMC. At the time of the stabbing, he was out on unsupervised leave.

This is not O.'s first conviction, according to the broadcaster. In 2016 he was sentenced to prison for an armed robbery at a gas station. He was not given institutionalized psychiatric care at that time, because he refused to cooperate with psychiatric examination. In June last year he also assaulted a nurse.
