Icy week in Netherlands kicks off with sunshine, snow

The start of an icy week in the Netherlands begins with some periods of sunshine and light snow in some areas on Monday, according to Weeronline. Maximum temperatures will range between 1 degree in the southwest, and -1 in the northeast. Wednesday and Thursday will be the coldest days this week, with ambient temperatures around -10 degrees expected, the weather services reports.

Cloud cover will increase across the country on Monday afternoon. Snowfall is expected in the east of the country, and in the far north. Due to a moderate to strong northeast wind, ambient temperatures this afternoon will feel around -8 degrees.

Overnight temperatures will range between -4 degrees in Zeeland and -9 degrees in Noord-Brabant. More snow my fall in the northern parts of the country, further reducing temperatures to between -10 and -14 degrees.

Tuesday is also expected to start out sunny, with cloud cover increasing during the day. Some snowfall is again expected, especially in the Wadden Sea area where between 5 and 10 centimeters of snow may fall. Afternoon temperatures will hover around zero.

Wednesday and Thursday will be particularly cold, according to Weeronline. Maximum temperatures on Wednesday will be around -1 degree in Zeeland, -2 degrees in the middle of the country and -4 degrees in Groningen. With that Wednesday is expected to be the coldest day of this winter. "With ambient temperatures of -9 in the southwest to -13 in the northeast, it is advisable to wear extra thick clothes and in multiple layers", Weeronline warns.

Thursday will start out sunny, but very cold with minimums between -5 degrees and -10 degrees, and windchill dropping that further to -13 degrees in Zeeland and -18 degrees in Groningen. Maximum temperatures will range between -2 degrees in the northeast and 1 degree in the southwest. Thursday is expected to be the coldest start of meteorological spring in the Netherlands since 1940.
