High speed trains could connect Amsterdam to Groningen, Leeuwarden

ProRail is investigating possibilities for high speed trains between Amsterdam and Groningen or Leeuwarden. The Dutch rail manager would like to have a train run this route in an hour, instead of the current over two hours, NU.nl reports.

It will not be necessary to install a high speed line, but the speed on existing lines will need to be increased considerably, according to the newspaper. The fast train will also not stop anywhere along the way.

ProRail and NS is working on plans for high speed trains on this route in response to the large number of passengers traveling between Amsterdam and Groningen or Leeuwarden. The Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management still has to approve the plans. It can therefore still be a few years before high speed trains will actually run between Amsterdam and Groningen.
