Drivers fined over a million times for speeding between Amsterdam, Utrecht

Last year over a million fines were issued to drivers speeding on the A2 and A12 highways between Amsterdam and Utrecht, according to an overview from the Ministry of Justice and Security, NOS reports.

Motorists were 'flashed' on the A2 between Amsterdam and Utrecht 650 thousand times, and on the A12 near Utrecht over 413 thousand times. Third place for most speeding tickets went to the A4 at Leidschendam, where speeding cameras caught motorists driving too fast 250 thousand times.

The total number of fines issued based on speeding cameras decreased slightly in 2017. A total of 2.1 million fines were issued in this way, some 77 thousand less than in 2016. The average speeding fine was 58 euros.

Fewer fines were also issued when taking all kinds of traffic violations into account. Over 9.2 million people were fined in 2017 for, among other things, speeding, driving over a red light, illegal parking and cellphone use in the car. In 2016 it was around 9.6 million.
