Amsterdam councilor gets death threat after criticism on squatters

Amsterdam city councilor Diederik Boomsma (CDA) received a death threat shortly after the city council discussed squatters that have been living on the ADM site in the city for decades. He reported the death threat to the police, the Telegraaf reports.

The police refused to comment to the newspaper about the threat. Boomsma confirmed that he was threatened and reported it to the police, but would not say anything further.

Boomsma, the faction leader for the CDA in Amsterdam, has been critical of the squatters on the ADM site for some time. He believes that they should be removed from the site. He also said this at the city council meeting on December 12th, in which the council discussed the future of the site with real estate owners and shipyard owners. He received the death threat a shortly afterwards.

Chidda Vastgoed, owner of the site, wants to develop the land, but the squatters are opposed to it, according to the newspaper. On Wednesday the Council of State is handling a case filed by the people living on the site in an effort to prevent the municipality ordering them to move.
