Suspects found with corpse leap off 4-story Breda balcony during chase; 2 hurt

The body of a dead man was found in a flat where two suspects apparently tried to evade police by leaping from the third-floor apartment’s balcony. The two suspects were seriously injured as a result and taken to an area hospital under police supervision.

It all started with a police surveillance team attempting a routine traffic stop in the Hoge Vucht district of at about 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday, police said. Officers tried to pull a vehicle over for inspection, but the two passengers refused to stop. Instead they fled at full speed and police gave chase. The suspects ditched the vehicle on Roeselarestraat and ran into an apartment on a nearby building's top floor.

A search of the vehicle turned up several small weapons, police said in a statement. A responding canine unit helped police track down the two men, and a tactical team arrived on scene to assist in the arrest.

As police closed in and entered the front of the apartment, the two suspects jumped off the balcony at the rear, police said. Both men, aged 26 and 27, were severely injured from the apparent escape attempt. According to newspaper AD one of them landed on a lamp post. Three ambulances and a helicopter arrived at the scene during during the morning excitement.

The dead body was found in the apartment where the two suspects fled. The investigation into the cause and manner of death, and the identity of the victim was ongoing as of early Tuesday afternoon. The identity and residence of the suspects was not released, nor was a list of weapons found in the vehicle.
