King's Day stabbing: Six years in prison for 2016 crime

A 21-year-old man from Wijchen was sentenced to six years of imprisonment for a stabbing during a 2016 Kings Night celebration at a bar in Nijmegen. He will also have to pay financial compensation to the victims of 20,000 euros each.

One victim lost two-and-a-half liters of blood, while the other required the removal of his spleen. The appeal verdict released on Friday stated it was a miracle neither victim died in the fight, RTV Utrecht reported. The court affirmed that the suspect was guilty of attempted murder.

The perpetrator, who was under the influence of alcohol, stabbed his two victims repeatedly in their stomach, back, and arms. The stabbing was the consequence of a fight.

Both victims were said to be from Veenendaal, and were aged 19 and 29 when the fight took place. At the time of the incident, police said three people were taken to hospital from the scene and a fourth person visited the hospital on their own as a result of the fight. This included a 19-year-old from Wijchen and an 18-year-old from Nijmegen.

Last year the offender received the same sentence of six years of imprisonment from the court. He challenged this with the appeal, because according to him he acted in self-defence.
