Electric driving 10% more expensive than petrol: ANWB

Driving an electric car is 10 percent more expensive than driving a petrol car, according to calculations by the ANWB. The price per kilometer of a new petrol car is 50.6 cents, while that of a new electric car is 55.9 cents, RTL Nieuws reports.

These rates were calculated on the basis of four years of use and 15 thousand kilometers driven per year. For the comparison, the ANWB took an average fully electric car that cost less than 50 thousand euros as a starting point, and then calculated the total costs involved in owning and using this virtual car. This included the purchase price, that it will be used for four years, and drive 15 thousand kilometers per year. That amounted to 55.9 cents per kilometer, and 689 euros per month.

A comparable price index has been made for petrol cars for years. The cost of purchasing and using a virtual average petrol car for four years amounted to 50.6 cents per kilometer and 632 euros per month.

Electric driving is therefore more expensive, but not much more expensive, ANWB director Frits van Bruggen said to the broadcaster.

The ANWB also spoke to Dutch consumers about electric driving. 38 percent of respondents said they are interested in electric driving, 21 percent are not interested and 41 percent are neutral.
