Carer accused of murdering patients with insulin suspected in 9 more cases

A 21-year-old nursing home worker accused of intentionally injecting elderly patients with overdoses of insulin is now suspected in two other fatal cases, the public prosecutor announced on Thursday. Rahiied A. was already suspected of causing the death of one person, and having possible involvement in the deaths of four others.

There are at least six known cases where a victim survived.

The young Rotterdam man worked as a caretaker at multiple facilities in the Netherlands prior to his arrest on November 17. He was taken into custody after an elderly woman fell ill following an unnecessary insulin treatment at 't Huys the Hoecke in Puttershoek, prosecutors stated.

She made a statement to police about the arrested man, triggering the criminal investigation. Another patient at the Puttershoek, Zuid-Holland location died following an erroneous use of insulin.

The incidents link to the Jasmijnhuis and De Riederborgh in Ridderkerk, and a Humanities location in Rotterdam. Rotterdam police major crimes detectives are leading the investigation, with prosecutors, the facilities, victims and surviving family members all cooperating, the public prosecutor noted.

A court in Rotterdam remanded the suspect into custody for an additional 90 days as the case unfolds. Those who know Rahiied A. were shocked by the allegations, calling him a diligent, ambitious worker and a family-focused person.
