Freight train derailed in Zeeland; cleanup to take all day

A freight train carrying liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) derailed in Nieuwdorp in Zeeland on Monday night. No one was injured and there was no leakage or risk of explosion, according to the Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate. The cleanup is expected to take until early Wednesday morning, AD reports.

The derailment happened on Frankrijkweg. One of the train's 20 wagons ended up on its side. A second wagon also derailed, but is still on its wheels. Emergency services closed down the street and surrounding area. The police and Inspectorate are investigating how the derailment happened.

A start will be made on removing the two derailed wagons around 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. After that the rails must be repaired. The entire cleanup will take around 24 hours. Frankrijkweg in Nieuwdorp will remain closed for the entire operation. A detour was set up and traffic controllers are in place.
