Rotterdam, Groningen to get UN climate center
The United Nations Global Center of Excellence on Climate Adaption (GCECA) that is opening in the Netherlands, will be based in Rotterdam and Groningen, State Secretary Sharon Dijksma of Infrastructure and Environment announced. The two cities' joint application had the most convincing plan, she said, according to NOS.
The GCECA will employ about 20 people, whose task it will be to advise countries on how to best adapt to climate change, especially concerning infrastructure and agriculture. Rotterdam will build a climate-neutral floating office for GCECA employees. And in Groningen they will be housed in a sustainable office building.
Dijksma called this beautiful news for Rotterdam and Groningen. According to her, the two cities are now "properly on the map worldwide".
In addition to the Rotterdam-Groningen joint proposal, six other candidates applied for this honor.
