Dutch insurance fraud cases up 20 percent

Dutch insurers caught 10,001 fraudulent claims last year, a 20 percent increase compared to 2015. The claims involved a total of 83 million euros, according to a nnual figures the center for fighting insurance crime CBV published on Thursday, ANP reports.

The CBV is part of the Dutch Federation of Insurers. A total of 27,257 insurance claims were investigated last year. Since October 2016 over 500 fraudsters were fined 532 euros to cover investigation costs.

The insurers noted a striking increase in "scooter fraud", in which scooter riders fraudulently claimed a substantial amount for a year's study delay. An increasing number of young people also try to earn back their holiday costs will false claims to travel insurance. In the first half of this year, the number of travel insurance claims submitted by 25 to 35 year olds doubled compared to the same period in 2015 and 2016.
