Approaching storms triggers code yellow warning for entire Netherlands

Heavy rain and thunderstorms will enter the Netherlands from the south this afternoon and spread across the country during the course of the afternoon and evening, according to meteorological institute KNMI. The KNMI issued a code yellow warning for the entire country.

According to the institute, the thunderstorms may be accompanied by hail, strong winds and a large amount of rain falling in a short period of time. "Traffic and outside activities may be hindered. Avoid open water and open areas, don't shelter under trees. Follow weather reports and warnings." The heaviest showers will leave the country during the early hours of Thursday morning.

Before the storms, afternoon temperatures for the entire country are expected to reach 30 degrees or above. Hikers taking part in the Nijmegen Vierdaagse are advised to keep hydrated, wear a light colored cap and remember to apply sunscreen on a regular basis.
