Hague school to compensate kids who missed class photo during Eid al-Adha

The Maria Montessori school in the Hague must pay a Muslim mother 500 euros in compensation because her children missed being in the class photo, which was taken during Eid al-Adha, the court in the Hague ruled on Monday. The mother's lawyer called it discrimination that the photographer came when Islamic children had the day off for the so-called Sacrifice Feast, AD reports.

The court ruled that the school did not act properly and should have had the photographer come in on another day. By failing to do so, the school differentiated between students and that is not permitted under the General Equal Treatment Act. The mother demanded 10 thousand euros in compensation, but the court felt that that went too far.

The school board immediately acknowledged that the schedule was not ideal, but it was the only day the photographer could fit the school in. The school did arrange that the photographer came back on another day for individual photos. But the class photos were taken on Eid al-Adha, and the Muslim children were therefore not included.

The PVV already submitted parliamentary questions about the matter, according to AD. Among other things, the party wants to know whether the judge is "crazy" and can be suspended.
