Eindhoven's economic growth surpassing that of large Dutch cities

Eindhoven's economy is growing faster than those of the four large cities in the Randstad, Statistics Netherlands revealed on Thursday. Last year Eindhoven's GDP grew by 3.6 percent, compared to the National average of 2.2 percent. Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht and The Hague all saw growth between 2.2 and 3 percent.

According to the stats office, Eindhoven's high-tech industry plays a big role in the municipality's economic growth. A large part can be attributed to the presence of companies like ASML, Philips and NXP.

The gross added value of Eindhoven - everything produced in the municipality, minus other goods and services purchased elsewhere - exceeded the 13 billion euros level for the first time last year and was 3.5 percent higher than in 2015. The national average was 2.7 percent growth. Eindhoven's industry and energy sectors in particular saw significant growth - the added value increased by 8.2 percent.

Commercial services in Eindhoven grew by 2.4 percent, almost the same level as their sector partners in the rest of the Netherlands. Non-commercial services like healthcare, government and education, increased less than the national average.
