Dutch PM Rutte's Hindi tweet to Indian PM baffles Twitter users

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid a working visit to the Netherlands on Tuesday. To welcome him, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte tweeted a message to him in Hindi. While the gesture was appreciated, Rutte's message mostly left internet users confused.

The problem was that the Dutch Prime Minister forgot to add spaces between the words.

According to Indian broadcaster NDTV, the tweet roughly translates to: "Welcome to the Netherlands Narendra Modi. Our bilateral relations go back 70 years and with that I am extremely excited about our meeting."

The tweet quickly went viral. And while it was met with some confusion and jokes - one Twitter user replied YouForgotToAddSpace, for example - the general response was one of appreciation. As another Twitter user pointed out: "It's not his language. At least he tried."

After the meeting between the two Prime Ministers, Rutte posted another tweet in Hindi, and this time he got it right.

"Thank you for visiting the Netherlands Narendra Modi. We look forward to our continuous cooperation in the coming years", the tweet reads.

The Indian Prime Minister responded with a tweet in Dutch. Translated, it reads: "I thank the people and government of the Netherlands for the phenomenal hospitality during my visit. This visit was memorable and productive."

Ik bedank het volk en regering van Nederland voor de fenomenale gastvrijheid tijdens mijn bezoek. Dit bezoek was memorabel en productief.
