Indian PM Modi cancels trip to Netherlands; KLM stops flying over Pakistan

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has canceled a planned visit to the Netherlands due to the escalating conflict with Pakistan. KLM has officially stopped flying over Pakistan, a spokesperson for the Dutch airline told the Telegraaf on Wednesday morning.

On Tuesday evening, India attacked several locations in Pakistan following days of rising tensions over a deadly attack by militants in the disputed Himalayan valley of Kashmir. According to Pakistan, the attacks killed at least 26 people and injured 46 people.

Modi was scheduled to visit Norway, Croatia, and the Netherlands in mid-May, but has now postponed this visit.

KLM could not tell the Telegraaf for how long it would avoid the Pakistani airspace and how much of a delay a detour around the country would cause passengers. “We are continuously monitoring the situation,” the spokesperson said.

On Monday, KLM still told the Telegraaf that it would continue to fly over Pakistan. This was in response to other airlines announcing that they would divert flights, including Air France, British Airways, Lufthansa, and Emirates.
