Union Jack projected on Amsterdam CS for victims of Manchester attack

The municipality of Amsterdam projected an image of the British flag, the Union Jack, onto Amsterdam Central Station on Tuesday night to show solidarity with the victims of an attack in Manchester on Monday.

"Out of solidarity with the victims of the attack in Manchester, Amsterdam Central Station is lit with the Union Jack", the municipality said on twitter.

An explosion in the Manchester Arena shortly after an Ariana Grande concert killed 22 people and injured 59 others. Many of the victims are children. The attack was claimed by terrorist organization Islamic State.

Earlier on Tuesday the flags outside Amsterdam's city hall were hung at half mast, according to Het Parool. An artist also placed three lit Andreas-crosses in front of the station, for the Europa League finals match between Ajax and Manchester tonight.

Many other cities in the world also lit famous buildings with the Union Jack on Tuesday. And other buildings were left partly or entirely unlit to show sympathy, including the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Colosseum in Rome and the Empire State Building in New York, NOS reports.

In Geneva the Union Jack was projected onto the 140 meter high fountain Jet d'Eau. Dubai shone the flag onto the 800 meter high Burj Khalifa.
