Arrest made in father, son double homicide; Suspect caught torching stolen car
The police arrested a suspect in the investigation into the murders of a father and son in Zoetermeer on Tuesday. The man was arrested in Rotterdam on Tuesday. He was caught setting fire to an Opel Corsa hijacked shortly after the fatal shooting, a police spokesperson confirmed to ANP after reports in the Telegraaf.
The police would not say whether the arrested person is also suspected of involvement in the murders. "We will of course continue to investigate", the spokesperson said to the news wire. She added that the suspect in restricted custody - only allowed contact with his lawyer.
The murders happened in the parking lot of a gym on Edisonstraat on Tuesday morning. 49-year-old Rene van Doorn and his 23-year-old son, also called Rene, were shot and killed while sitting in a Mercedes. The two perpetrators fled the scene in a BMW, which was found burning a short time later. The police believe that another car found in the area - a Volkswagen with a Belgian license plate - was the perpetrators' planned getaway car. But instead of using the Volkswagen, they hijacked a Opel Corsa and fled in it.
The Opel Corsa was found in Rotterdam on Tuesday night, while the arrested suspect was trying to set it alight.
The motive for the murders is still unclear.
