Threatening letter found in suspicious package left at Heerlen city hall

A suspicious package left at the Heerlen city hall last week Wednesday contained a threatening letter addressed to th city's mayor Ralf Krewinkel, according to lawyer Sjanneke de Crom, ANP reports.

De Crom represents the person suspected of leaving the package. He was arrested on Thursday and released again on Tuesday. He remains a suspect.

The package was discovered during a city council meeting on Wednesday evening last week. Everyone was evacuated from the building and the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team was called to investigate.

Exactly what the letter addressed to Mayor Krewinkel said is unclear. The motive for the package is also uncertain. "There are currently no administrative conflicts in the municipality of Heerlen that can be linked to this incident", a police spokesperson said to ANP.
