Record number of passengers travel through Schiphol, Eindhoven airport

In the third quarter of this year, Schiphol and Eindhoven airport both accommodated a record number of passengers, according to figures Statistics Netherlands released. At Schiphol 18.6 million passengers crossed the floor, an 8 percent increase compared to the same quarter last year. Eindhoven had 1.5 million passengers, a 15 percent increase.

According to Statistics Netherlands, these two Dutch airports have seen an increase in passenger each quarter for the past six years.

All the airports in the Netherlands together accommodated 20.8 million passengers during the third quarter, 8 percent more than the same quarter last year. Regional airports in Rotterdam, Groningen and Maastricht saw a decline in the number of passengers. Maastricht in particular saw a relatively big drop, with only 49 thousand passengers using the airport, compared to 75 thousand in the same quarter last year. Statistics Netherlands attributes this decline mostly to the fact that Maastricht dropped a number of destinations.

Schiphol also processed more cargo during the third quarter. A total 416 tons of cargo went through the airport in the third quarter, 1.7 percent more than the same time last year. At Maastricht there was a 42 percent decline in freight traffic, dropping to 6,600 tons.
