Two 182-year-old time capsules opened at Delft church

Two time capsules were found during renovations to the Nieuwe Kerk in Delft. They were opened on Thursday. The first contained a list of officers on parchment dated 1834. The second was a short statement on the restoration of the church dated 1924, the Telegraaf reports.

Wilco Maak, head of both the Oude- and Nieuwe Kerk, had the honor of opening the surprise capsules. They were found behind a memorial plate. He was pleased with the find, though did joke that it is "too bad there were no gold coins inside".

The memorial plate behind which the capsules were found was placed by Officers of the Artillery in 1834, in memory of two soldiers killed in the Belgian Revolution. The time capsules are two lead sleeves of different thicknesses.

The restoration of the church will continue as planned. Blaak does not expect any more surprises, but he is hoping.
