Justice Minister to investigate former Police Chief: report

Minister Ard van der Steur of Security and Justice is expected to announce an independent investigation into former National Police Chief Gerard Bouman on Wednesday, NRC reports. The investigation will focus on whether Bouman played a roll in the irregularities in the police's Central Works Council's spending.

According to the newspaper, the CWC had a budget of 1.6 million euros last year. There are suspicions that Bouman used this exceptionally high budget to bribe the council into making difficult decisions.

Jan Struijs, president of police union NPB, told NRC that the information show that "at least the suspicion arises that the decision making on the police reorganization was infected."

Current police chief Erik Akerboom already pressed charges against Frank Giltay, who resigned as chairman of the CWC as soon as an investigation into its spending was announced.
