Two cops to be prosecuted for detainee's chokehold death
Two of the five police officers suspected of involvement in Mitch Henriquez death in custody will be criminally prosecuted, the Public Prosecutor informed Henriquez' family and the suspected officers on Monday, NOS reports.
The 42-year-old Aruban man died a day after being arrested at a music festival in The Hague in June last year. The police officers used a chokehold in the arrest. An autopsy later revealed that Henriquez died due to a crushed larynx, likely caused by the chokehold.
Henriquez' death resulted in days of riots in the Hague neighborhood of Schilderswijk.
Earlier on Monday two police scientists released a report stating that the police officers made "error after error" in arresting Henriquez. According to the report, the “heavy handed use of force against Henriquez”, was “disproportionate, excessive and improper”. Not only did the officers involved use the controversial chokehold, they also resorted to violence too quickly and got medical assistance too late.
