First arrest related to tensions in Turkey-Dutch community

The police made the first arrest in the investigation into threats reported in the Turkish-Dutch community following an attempted coup in Turkey in July, the police announced in a statement. A 42-year-old man from Rotterdam was arrested on Monday morning on suspicion of incitement, insult, threats and sedition. The police believes that more arrests will follow across the Netherlands, but especially in Rotterdam. Almost half of the threat reports received came from Rotterdam, particularly from Maasstad. The Rotterdam man arrested was mentioned in a number of reported threats. "We are focusing on de-escalation, but if necessary we intervene immediately", Peter Slog, head of the Turkish tensions portfolio at the police, said in the statement. "We are the police for every Dutch person that falls victim to a crime. We do not choose sides, but are neutral and empathetic, with empathy and understanding for the difficult situation in which meany Turkish people find themselves. They must feel safe to report crimes and know that their report is in good hands with detectives who investigate the case carefully in consultation with the Public Prosecutor."
