Upcoming tropical weather triggers national heat plan

Warm to hot weather expected for the coming days prompted national health institute RIVM to activate the National Heat Plan for the entire Netherlands. The RIVM calls on citizens to pay extra attention to remaining cool and hydrated, and to make sure vulnerable people with health problems do the same. Meteorological institute KNMI issued a code yellow weather warning for continuous heat that is in effect for the entire country until noon on Thursday. Afternoon temperatures will reach around 30 degrees every day this week. Persistent heat of this kind poses a health risk for vulnerable people, including elderly people, chronically ill people and people with obesity. The RIVM warns these people in particular to make sure they do not overheat or dehydrate. Parents with young children should also make sure their kids stay out of the sun and drink plenty of water. Pet owners should also remember that when they are hot, their pets and their fur are likely even hotter. Make sure your dogs and cats can find a cool spot to relax in. Provide plenty of water, shade and a wet cloth if needed.
