Dutch saves millions with elimination from European Championships

The fact that the Netherlands national football team is not playing in the European Championships this year, is saving employers in the country millions of euros and boosting the Dutch economy, according to Acture, the Telegraaf reports. The number of people calling in sick is much lower due because of Oranje's elimination, says Acture, a private executor of the sick leave law. Each time the Dutch team wins an important match or tournament, about 75 thousand people call in sick. If Oranje was taking part in the EC, that would be about 60 thousand people a day at this time. Each sick day costs employers an average of about 250 euros. According to Acture's calculations, that means that Dutch employers are saving 3.75 million euros for each match Oranje does not play.
