Low prices forcing organic meat farmers out of business

Organic meat farmers are struggling to keep their head above water due to the low prices supermarkets pay for their meat, BNR reports based on its own research. Despite the fact that organic meat is expensive to buy, the farmers earn very little from it, according to the broadcaster. They get about 5 euros per kilogram, a price that hasn't increased for 15 years. Though taxes and the cost of feed for their animals kept increasing. According to LTO Netherlands, an increasing number of organic meat farmers are deciding to switch to selling organic milk. Last year there were 59 organic farms selling both milk and meat, and 140 selling meat only.
