More 17-year-olds awarded drivers license

Just over 8 percent of 17-year-olds in the Netherlands have a driver's license for car, the highest proportion since the Netherlands made it possible for 17-year-olds to get a license in 2011, according to figures released by Statistics Netherlands on Friday. In 2011 the Netherlands implemented the 2toDrive project. In this project young people can start getting driving lessons at age 16.5 and take their driver's test at age 17. Those who pass are allowed to drive with an adult in the car until they reach the age of 18, after which they candrive by themselves. Despite this, most young people wait to turn 18 before getting their license. At the start of this year, 44 percent of 18- and 19-year-olds had their license, compared to 8.2 percent of 17-year-olds. Among 20- to 25-year-olds 70 percent have a driver's license.
