New Zealander gets house arrest in crash that killed Dutch woman

A New Zealand court sentenced a man to six weeks of house arrest and 200 hours of community service on Thursday for causing the death of a Dutch woman in a traffic accident. He also has to pay 7 thousand euros in compensation and his drivers license was suspended for 1.5 years, AD reports. The accident happened in Auckland, Australia last year, where the woman was visiting her daughter. The New Zealander got distracted behind the wheel and hit the 63-year-old woman from behind. She was seriously injured and died in hospital after undergoing 25 surgeries. The Dutch woman's husband flew over after the accident. During the trial he told the court how he decorated his wife's hospital room for their 40th wedding anniversary and how her funeral was held in the Netherlands on the day that would have been his retirement party.
