Amstelveen mayor threatened over asylum center

Amstelveen mayor Miriam van 't Veld received a letter containing death threats over the municipality's plans to give shelter to asylum seekers, she informed the city council in a letter on Thursday, AT5 reports. "You will understand that I am shocked, but even more that I am disappointed about the people who sent the letter to me anonymously, the beliefs they proclaim, beliefs that apparently have to be imposed with a death threat", the mayor wrote. "We as a municipality assumed the responsibility to take in asylum seekers And we do not do so as a municipality alone, but together with many volunteers and the whole community. I will not yield to threats." Amstelveen plans to house up to 400 asylum seekers in a vacant office building in the coming months. Many residents expressed concerns about the shelter during information evenings. Van 't Veld reported the threat and the Public Prosecutor is investigating.
