Amsterdam theater Carré to bring annual Broadway shows

The 129-year-old Amsterdam theater Carré has announced plans to bring a major American production to the Netherlands every year as part of the new “Broadway on the Amstel” theatrical series. The series kicks off with the European premiere of Pippin on March 10, theater director Madeleine van der Zwaan announced this week. Each of the shows will be shown in English, with a touring cast from the American productions. Full disclosure: Carré is a current advertiser on the NL Times. However, the theater was not involved in any way with the writing or editing of this article. “Carré is known for its variety of programming. We aim to bring artists and performances to the Amstel that represent the best of their genres,” said van der Zwaan in a statement. “You no longer have to go to New York for the best musicals, because Broadway is now on the Amstel.” Amsterdam mayor Eberhard van der Laan remarked on the historical connection between the two cities, with the Dutch founding America’s largest city as New Amsterdam in 1626. “It is fantastic that a vibrant piece of that city is coming back to Amsterdam,” he said. A similar “Broadway in…” moniker is used for productions in London, and across the U.S. and Canada, including in Chicago, Miami and Montreal. Roughly 400,000 people visited the Royal Carré Theater in 2015.
