Emma, Liam, Julia and Sem: The most popular baby names in the Netherlands

The most popular baby names in the Netherlands last year were Emma and Liam, according to social security authority SVB's annual list of the most popular baby names. The most popular names for 2014 were Sophie and Daan. Second and third most popular names for girls were Julia and Sophie respectively, both popular names over the past few years. Sophie was number one in 2014 and Julia number three. Tess, the most popular girl name in 2013, dropped to number 7 last year. Emma was at number 2 in 2014. Liam climbed significantly from number 17 in 2013 to 9 in 2014 to first place last year. Number two and three in boys names were Sem and Lucas, up from 5th and 6th place respectively. The name Bram made a remarkable fall. For three years in a row Bram was the 2nd most popular name for boys. Last year it dropped to 13th place. In 2014 the most popular boy name was Daan and in 2013 it was Sem. About 168 thousand children were born in 2015, 82 thousand girls and 86 thousand boys.
