Dutch football "certain" to test video replay in Cup matches

Dutch football association KNVB will likely begin use of video review in football matches that take place during next season’s KNVB Cup, the association director Gijs de Jong told NPO Radio 1. While still considered a test, the technology will likely be used to some extent in about 25 cup matches. De Jong said it was practically "certain" the tests would move forward after the International Football Association Board gave a strong positive recommendation for wider experiments with the technology during its annual meeting in London on Thursday. The measure will be discussed during general meetings in Cardiff in March, FIFA stated. It is still not decided in what cases the replay technology will be used. In addition to awarding or nullifying goals, the system could help match referees determine red cards, questionable tackles, free kicks or penalties. “We will be working on a final protocol based on the experiences here and in America,” De Jong said. “Because it is still in an experimental phase.” Coaches and teams could challenge decisions and request video review, the Telegraaf reported. Additionally, the video review referee could advise the match referee on their own initiative or at the request of officials on the field.
