Frozen roads, sidewalks a danger for most of the Netherlands

The KNMI issued a code red warning for black ice and slick roads in Groningen, Friesland and Drenthe. Do not drive if it is not strictly necessary. The warning is in effect from 5:00 a.m. until noon. A code orange warning is in effect for Overijssel, Flevoland and the Wadden area. Motorists are advised to adapt their driving behavior - keep a safe following distance and reduce speed. Keep a close eye on weather forecasts and traffic information. KNMI expects that the sleet and ice will disappear around noon, but the roads may still be slick. A code yellow warning will apply to the northern parts of the country for the rest of Tuesday. The more central and southern parts of the country will get to deal with sleet and ice on Tuesday night. The KNMI issued a code yellow warning for Zuid-Holland, Noord-Holland and Gelderland, which will be in effect from midnight until 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday. The weather conditions are also affecting public transport. Limited trains are travelling between Zwolle and Groningen/Leewarden. Travelers should take 60 minutes extra traveling time into account. NS expects to be back to the regular schedule around 11:00 a.m. Traffic information service VID expects a very busy morning rush hour, especially in north of the line Den Over in Noord-Holland to Hardenberg in Overijssel. The slick roads already caused about 50 accidents in the northern parts of the country, RTL Nieuws reports. In most cases there was only minor damage.
