Fireworks cause at least 12 serious eye injuries

At least twelve people, including three young children, seriously damaged their eyes in various accidents involving fireworks on New Year's Eve, according to the the specialist eye care hospital Oogziekenhuis in Rotterdam, RTL Nieuws reports. Two victims damaged both their eyes. At least six people will be operated on in the hospital today. Half of the victims were hurt by fireworks they did not light themselves. The severity of the injuries are unclear, but hospital ophthalmologist Tjeerd de Faber believes that this year's injuries are worse than last year. He also expects that the number of victims will increase significantly in the coming days. Last year the hospital treated 10 firework related injuries over New Year's, the year before there were 46.
