Record 1.9 million visitors descend on Van Gogh Museum

The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam welcomed a record number of 1.9 million visitors this year, an increase of 18 percent compared to the 1.6 million people who visited in 2014, the museum announced on Tuesday. The museum attributes the growth in the number of visitors to an "exceptional combination of factors". One of these are the global attention for the 125th anniversary of the famous Dutch artist's death. Another contributing factor is the new new entrance, and the sunflower labyrinth built for the opening. Other factor's include the successful online campaign, exhibition program and a strong growth in the number of tourists visiting Amsterdam. Another big attraction was the exhibition on the Norwegian artist Edvard Munch and Vincent van Gogh as his inspiration, featuring great works by both artist including The Scream and Starry Night. This was the first time that the artworks by these two artist were brought together on a large scale. "The attention for Van Gogh and our museum is overwhelming. Countless people from around the world show in very different ways that Van Gogh is still a huge source of inspiration", said managing director Axel Ruger. "That this translates into a still growing number visitors, is the icing on the cake for me. A beautiful end to an eventful year." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FunTctY7mg8&feature=youtu.be
