YouTube, Netflix make up half of telecom KPN’s internet traffic

Half of all internet traffic using the network from Dutch telecom KPN is to deliver video, the company revealed in its quarterly statement on Tuesday. Roughly 25 percent of traffic comes from YouTube, while 20 percent is from Netflix. Five percent of data served comes from other video providers, though it is not clear if pirated streams reached via popular service Popcorn Time are included in those figures. Estimates released in January suggested that nearly as many people used Popcorn Time as Netflix in the Netherlands. NetFlix comprised of about 12 percent of traffic last year on KPN, while YouTube data went up from 23 percent. KPN's report demonstrated a drop in sales of three percent to 1.76 billion euro, though managed a dramatic turnaround in profit. The company had a net gain of 87 million euro, compared to a loss in the third quarter of 2014 amounting to 75 million euro. Growth in mobile service accounted for some of the company's stronger figures. KPN saw an increase of 80,000 consumer plans, with 45 percent of customers taking at least 1GB data bundles. Only 25 percent of customers purchased so much data a year earlier. KPN also showed gains of 33,000 broadband customers and 35,000 fiber optic customers.
